Artists’ prints with chine collee

I have collected these examples of artists’ prints with chine collee to illustrate some of the many ways you can use this versatile technique, and inspire you to try it in your own prints.

The artists here work with a variety of print techniques, these examples include mono print, etching, lino print, wood cut, carborundum and collagraph.

Among the chine collee papers in the prints illustrated you will spot found materials (dress pattern, newspaper articles and photos) as well as plain and multi coloured paper.

Chine collee can be very subtle, it is often hard to tell if the effect in the print is actually chine collee or printing ink. This sometimes happens when you are looking at an original print, and even more so when looking at a photograph of a print. The only reliable way to be sure is when the artist mentions ‘chine collee’ in the print information.  I have limited my choice of examples here to those where chine collee is made explicit in the accompanying text.

There are a lot of examples on line to choose from and I selected fairly randomly, picking things that appealed to me, as well as demonstrating aspects of the technique. When I sat back to have a look at my collection I was surprised to notice that most are by women. I am now wondering if there is some particular connection between chine collee and women printmakers?

Whether you are a man or a woman, if you want to discover more about using chine collee in your own prints please have a look at this post.
